Cash Out of Your Gift Cards

Christmas 2006 was a record season for gift cards. Some people feel that giving a gift card is more “personal” than giving cash. What do you do if you get a gift card that you don’t want or would rather have the cash instead?

Sell it.

There’s a healthy aftermarket for gift card sales/trading on sites like eBay and CardAvenue.com. Just remember that you can’t expect to sell the card for its full face value; it will sell at some discount. (Why would someone risk buying a dud gift card from you unless they thought they could get a discount?)

See MSNBC for an interesting Washington Post article about the regifting of gift cards.
