Why Your Signature Won’t Save You

Identity theft is a continual problem in today’s world. The crime is so prevalent that we dedicated an entire section of our website to combating it.

Many people mistakenly believe that thieves can’t steal and use their cards without accurately forging their signatures. In reality, your signature on the back of your card means absolutely nothing. Sure, some cashiers and sales clerks check the back of your card to make sure its signed. But they really could care less what’s written there. Need proof? Check out the Great Credit Card Prank. The identity theft protection your signature affords is akin to closing your front door but never locking it.

Of course, in this day and age, identity theft often occurs without your physical credit card being taken. Identity thieves try their best to lift your credit card information electronically. If you’re like me, you probably get several phony e-mails from eBay, PayPal, and other financial institutions (with many of which you have no business relationship) asking you to log in to update your information or else your account will be suspended. Don’t fall for it! Never click on an e-mail link to financial institution, even if it looks legitimate.
